Government should
avert hurdles in economy: Razzak Hasham Paracha
Mr. Razzak Hasham Paracha is the
chairman of Korangi Association of Trade & Industry. Mr. S.M.
Muneer Chief Patron KATI elected him the chairman of KATI for
2009-10 through his courageous discussion, having much anxiety
about country economic and having matchless adhesion to KATI.
He is bachelor in economic and later on did master Financing
Accounting.
Chairman Korangi Association of Trade & Industry,
Special interview to BM
Mr. Razzak Hasham Paracha said that today it's the business
community that playing pivotal role in handling economic,
industrial and country political situation. He anticipated,
god forbade! If our economy goes down than a civil war can be
seen here. The delineation of economy is due to less
patronization of Government. He openly lauded the performance
of S M. Muneer that always highlighted the problems of
business community through many platforms but he lamented that
Government seems taking economic decision without taking the
business community into confidence.
He told that to flourish the country economic situation there
should be consensus between Govt and business community
because business community leaves no stone unturned to work
for the safety, exaltation, betterment and integration for its
country. He further appealed to the government to decrease the
tariff of gas and electricity both for industrial and domestic
consumers. He stressed the need of promoting SMEs in country's
development and termed that they are the backbone of a
country. "Foreign investment could take place if there is
sustainability and tranquility in the country". He expressed,
He said need to improve the industrial sector in order to gain
handsome revenue.
While talking on financial gaining he termed that loans from
financial institutions can't meet our economic targets and
it's out of comprehension that government shows its tendency
towards them. He lauded the Musharaf's regime that economy was
really established and foreign investment furnished as time
passed. Signaling at Finance Minister in the same regime
strengthened the banking sector that created a wave of
pleasure for businessmen. He said, government can recover the
economy by carrying out our suggestions posed by the different
business associations. He lamented that electricity is being
expensive day by day and it directly affects the cost of doing
business and we hardly meet our targets in international
market.
He
expressed regretfully that current elite has utterly failed in
handling electricity, water and gas tariffs if they are
controlled for three years then industry can be progressed and
advanced and cost of doing business can declined. He confessed
that Government is not receiving tax from new tax payers but
pressurizing old tax payers that is supposed to be a less
favourism towards business community.
In his open statement he said that City Nazim Mustafa Kamal
has paid great attention to industrial infrastructure and
today we have good roads for transportation. He said more
constructional work are to be continued in near future if
government support there. Hsham highlighted that if industrial
sector is free of problems then investors tent to be there
additionally government should extent its full support to
cover up the problems of industrialists. He said that mark-up
rate should be in single digit in order to promote industry.
Though the Shaukat Tareen Finance Minister pledged to lessen
the mark up rate but to no use. He expected if Govt. wants
improvement in economic then it has rethink about mark up
rate. He suggest the government to take preventive measures to
handle all the issues as per requirement. |

business in violence
WE have been taught that a fire is caused by a combination of
oxygen, flame and combustible materials. This statement is
true but inadequate. As was confirmed by the much-publicised
TV coverage of the Ashura bombing in Karachi, a fire needs at
least two more ingredients: a gang of criminals leisurely
resorting to arson and a battalion of policemen - as if on
holiday - watching helplessly. The bar of violence in Karachi
is constantly being raised. From burning tyres in narrow,
isolated lanes we have graduated to destroying complete
markets on M.A. Jinnah Road. From TT pistols matters are now
settled with rocket launchers and hand-grenades. From street
thugs violence is now managed in a highly systematic manner.

Provisioning for loan losses
The
latest concessions given by the State Bank of Pakistan in loan
loss provisioning requirements are a positive move in the
context of sustaining banks' threatened equities but fall
short of market expectations. After banks disclosed their
performance results for 2008, it had been suggested in the
columns of this newspaper that, given the unexpected loan
losses caused by the global economic downturn, SBP should
extend the period for making provisions for these losses to
limit their immediate large impact on bank equities. Quite
appropriately, in the case of export loans, the SBP had
extended the loss provisioning period from six months to one
year. Another positive measure was the reduction in the
minimum capital requirements for banks - a timely move given
the pressures banks were bound to face in a recession. >>>>>
Efforts to check speculative trading
Mixed sentiments were observed in the local currency
market
this week where leading currency dealers and most analysts
were viewing the rupee at new lows against the dollar amid
weak economic indicators. The rupee however displayed firmness
versus dollar and euro during the week, resisting sharp fall
against major currencies. In a move to check speculative
dollar trading, the central bank decision to allow buyers to
purchase American currency of up to $5000 value without CNIC
production helped the rupee to rebound from sharp losses.
However, some independent experts are still predicting that
the dollar may touch Rs90 before year-end in the open market.
Meanwhile on the inter-bank market, the rupee commenced the
week on a positive note against dollar as it managed to

Islamic banking in Iran and Pakistan:
a comparative study
In recent years, several Muslim countries have made ambitious
attempts to practise Islamic banking. Iran and Pakistan appear
to be particularly active in transforming their banking and
financial sectors completely in line with the dictates of
shariah [Naqvi (1981)]. The present study aims to contribute
to the understanding of the process of Islamisation of banking
in these countries. This kind of understanding, it is
believed, is important for policy-makers guiding the
Islamisation process anywhere in the world. The study tracks,
over a period of a decade, the routes Iran and Pakistan have
taken to attain their avowed objective, and focusses on the
common concerns they share in their respective pursuits. The
study also discusses the diverging sets of problems faced by
these countries.
