Only 20 percent industrial units were
complying with environmental standards in Sindh., This was stated by the
provincial Secretary Environment and Alternative Energy Mir Husain Ali while
speaking at a seminar on "environment" on the occasion of international
Earth Day, organised bythe FPCCI standing committee on environment.

He said that rest of industrial units were not complying with environmental
standards and causing pollution. He underlined the need to convince the
owners of industrial units and their technical staff to adopt new
technologies to save energy and time. Ali pointed out that the absence of
required infrastructure industrial units was the major hurdle in the way of
environmental protection.

The industrialists were under pressure due to power interruption, high taxes
and other problems and, therefore, do not pay attention towards
environmental standards, he added. Chairman FPCCI environmental standing
committee Gulzar Firoz said that 70 of the pollution was caused by the
transport sector and industrial units were also responsible for polluting
environment.
FPCCI president Sultan Chawla said that we need to abide environmental
protection laws for a sustainable industrial growth and better living
standards. He was of the view that the industry and the economy was
incurring a loss of billions of rupees due to pollution and destruction of
natural resources in the country. Environmental expert Rafiq Ghous said that
the world has initiated green generation campaign this year to control
pollution and avert environmental changes and this will continued till 2010.

He underlined the need to promote green energy in Pakistan to save energy
and reduce pollution level. President National Forum for Environment and
Health Naeem Qureshi underlined the need to convene a meeting of top
industrialists and motivate them to adopt environment control methods
through incentives. He said that industries and municipal organisations
should be compelled to follow environmental laws. Tufail Zubaidi and Shafaat
Zaidi also addressed the session which was well attended by the technical
staff of the industrial units. |
