Dentonic means healthy and beautiful
smile
S.
A. Alavi Chief Executive Officer, Dentonic
S. A Alavi is the man of high spirit and superb motive. When
he was 20-year-old, was doing a small time job at a sugar mill
in East Pakistan, he had a severe toothache, which worsened to
such a degree that he asked God to take away his life if it
can not be cured. He tried different medicines and
prescriptions from dentists but to no avail. Finally his
prayer was answered. One day he came across a dentist who
claimed to cure toothache with help of his own medicinal
powder he called Dentonic.
In 1958, Alavi moved to Karachi along with a product conceived
and named by someone else. He first made Dentonic for himself,
family and friends. Soon, every one was asking for it. That is
when he realized it could be marketed. Gifted with
entrepreneurial spirit, he started doing odd jobs to save
money for his product, which went on to become a household
name in the next couple of years. In March 1963, he started
making and marketing Dentonic from a two-room factory and now
the Dentonic is a compulsory product for every house. Business
Monitor got a chance to meet the men behind the impressive
Dentonic, Mr. S. A Alavi

By: Mawaiz Khan Akash
The country's single largest steel producer Pakistan Steel

which has pulled down its production to about 25 percent due
to low stocks of raw material, mismanagement and non-technical

FPCCI CONDEMNS THE MCB
UNION PROTEST
The Federation of Pakistan, Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI)
and the whole business community are very much perturbed over
the protest by the MCB staff union outside MCB Towers and
their activities, which are not only damaging the banking
industry of Pakistan but also harming the image of Pakistan in
the world.
It has been learnt that they are continuously interfering in
the normal business activities of the bank and forcing the
closure of bank branches after threatening the bank staff, and
customers which is badly affecting the economic activities.
FPCCI believed that this kind of incidence will shake the
confidence of foreign investors and discourage the foreign and
local investment in Pakistan. The Government of Pakistan
should therefore take up the matter on priority basis in order
to resolve the on going dispute between MCB union and bank
management at the earliest in the best interest of economy and
the country. |

SITE Association of
Industry calls for representation in TDAP
Industry will not operate to its capacity and exports' and
revenue targets of the country will not be achieved unless the
Govt ensures un-interrupted supply of gas, electricity and
water at low rates to the industry and reduce mark-up to
single digit upto Dec 2009 as promised earlier.
This was stated by Acting Chairman of SITE Association of
Industry Ahsan Arshad Ayub while talking to a group of
reporters here on Saturday.
He said the industry is being shifted from Pakistan to other
countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia because of
un-attractive policies of the Govt and this calls for
immediate corrective measures to stop this tendency to save
the country's economy.
"Once an industry is shifted, it will not come back in a year
or two. But next generations will have to sacrifice, " he
said. Ahsan Ayub said that due to lack of business friendly
environment, no local and foreign investors are coming forward
to invest in Pakistan. If this situation continued, the
country will be faced with more un-employment creating to law
and order problem, and other socio-economic problems.
He regretted that no body will be ready to set up industry in
Nawabshah , Nooriabad and other industrial estates in interior
Sindh when SITE which is the largest industrial area of the
country with more than 3,000 factories is facing shattered
infrastructure and shortage of utilities like water, gas and
electricity. |

OPPOSES 6% INCREASE IN POWER TARIFF
The President, Lasbela Chamber of Commerce & Industry Mr.
Yakoob H. Karim in a press release issued today has expressed
great concern over 6% increase in Power Tariff which may
result in the collapse of industrial sector because of further
increase in production cost.
He urged the government to pursue the Power Distribution
Companies to improve their distribution system to curtail the
34% line losses and losses due to theft of energy instead of
increasing the Power Tariff.
Chamber's Chief further said that the Electricity Tariff is
already un-affordable for the common man and the raise in the
Tariff would badly affect the price structure of consumable
items and would create multiple problems for the people in
general and for the industries in particular.
It would also affect the export-oriented industries which
would not be able compete in the international markets. This
state of affairs would further create un-employment due to
possible closures of many industrial units and export houses.
He urged the government to immediately withdraw the 6%
increase in Power Tariff to save the industrial sector from
further disasters in view of not reducing the interest rates
by the State Bank of Pakistan in the new Monitory Policy. |

KWSB BoD yet to
approve budget
KARACHI: The board of directors (BoD) of the Karachi Water and
Sewerage Board has not met for 15 months and therefore it has
yet to approve the board's annual budget. It is pertinent to
mention that the KWSB's BoD approved the annual budget of the
utility only was during the last four years and that was for
the fiscal year 2008-09 when the Sindh Local Government
Minister Agha Siraj Durrani was the KWSB chairman.
KWSB Vice-Chairman Haji Munawwar Ali Abbasi, who is also
member of the provincial assembly, told Daily Times that
although the law is silent over the subject of the meeting of
BoD as no specifications regarding the time and period in this
regard has been mentioned in the book of law, but it was an
obligation that the BoD should have met, especially to peruse
and approve the annual budget of the KWSB.
Unfortunately, it was on the pretext of being a subordinate
office of the City District Government Karachi that the annual
budget of the KWSB has not been presented to the BoD, and the
matter has been suspended for the last 15 months, regretted
Abbasi. In fact, it is the BoD that holds the responsibility
to ensure smooth operations, maintenance of decorum and
sorting out the liabilities in respect to revenue and
expenditure balance, commented Abbasi.
It was only when the LG minister, while he held the office of
the KWSB chairman, was the BoD meeting convened and the annual
budget approved. The paradigm has entirely changed now as in
the past, a meeting of the BoD used to be held after every
three months, claimed Abbasi.
The Sindh government had issued a notification in July 5, 2008
according to which the directors of the KWSB board included
the city nazim (chairman), Haji Munawwar Ali Abbasi
(vice-chairman), additional chief secretary (development), LG
department secretary, industries department secretary, finance
department secretary, LG department special secretary, five
town nazims to be selected by the chairman, Karachi Port Trust
chairman, Karachi Electric Supply Company chairman, Karachi
Chambers of Commerce and Industries president, KWSB managing
director, Military Lands Karachi executive officer, a nominee
of Defence Housing Authority chairman and Pakistan Railways,
Karachi divisional superintendent. Sources in the KWSB told
Daily Times that the KWSB Act 1996 implies that the BoDs
should meet at least once in a three-month time. |

Pakistan's industry
protests energy costs
Pakistani industrialists oppose the government's proposed
power tariff increases.
The News Online reported that SITE Association of Trade and
Industry Chairman M.A. Jabbar commented, "We reject the
present faulty system of tariff determination which also
includes accumulated losses. Our home-grown policies are now
hostage to foreign lenders and their dictation while pushing
the local industry to the wall. The industry in Pakistan is
under severe pressure as utility charges are adding up to the
rising cost of production."
Industrialists advocate that instead of the price increases
the government should upgrade the national electrical grid and
reduce line losses instead of raising utility prices, which
will only further increase industrial production costs.
Industrialists criticize increasing utilities charges as a
government policy dictated to Islamabad by the International
Monetary Fund.
According to Korangi Association of Trade and Industry
Chairman Mian Zahid Hussain, power theft from the national
grid is extensive, with losses estimated as running at more
than $1.8 billion annually, and consequently this is where the
government must ensure good management of power. |

People now
preferring low-cost houses in Karachi
Most people in the city now prefer low-cost housing schemes,
in relatively less posh areas, to fulfill their basic housing
needs rather than buying property for investment sake. The
areas where low-cost housing is available are quite far from
the centre of city and includes areas such as Orangi Town,
Surjani Town, Gulshan-e-Tuaheed. Gulshan-e-Maymar, Quetta
Town, Gulshan-e-Mehran, Gulistan-e-Kazim and Gulshan-e-Shiraz.
These housing schemes are not just easy on the pockets of the
middle class, but in most cases, they can buy property there
by paying easy installments, which particularly suits the
salaried class.

Maymar Housing Scheme
A way of Living From its inception, Maymar's vision has
centered around stepping away from the status quo and making
quantum
leaps in defining the real estate and construction landscape
of the country. Maymar's projects, often considered
forward-looking and revolutionary at launch, are admired for
their elegance and attention to detail after completion.
Beyond that, Maymar's venture into developing a township in
the form of Gulshan-e-Maymar in the 1980s was in itself a bold
move at that time, again emanating from its philosophy of
testing uncharted waters. Maymar's core philosophy has endured
the test of time, and continues to be focused on changing the
future landscape of the industry it participates in. Our
vision for the next five years is to become the indisputable
number one development and construction company in the
country, and then leverage our local expertise to start to
become a formidable player in the entire region. |
